Nicoletta, when and how did you discover your flair for art?

Since I was a little child, while watching Disney films, I spent my time re-drawing the scenes I liked, and tried to imagine how the story could have continued. By changing the final scenes and introducing new characters. So I think I’ve always wanted to be an artist.

How would you best describe who you are as an artist?

I constantly try to improve my knowledge, when I work on something new and also whilst working on something I’m more comfortable with… I simply try to make it better. I love this work because it’s a constant challenge with yourself.

When did you decide to pursue art as a profession? What might you be doing if you weren’t making art?

As I said, I remember I always tried to be an artist, so I went to an art school and then to a comic book school in Rome. So I think I decided when I was a child. I think every work has an artistic side, even if we are unaware of it, so maybe If I had to choose another job, I think I’d try to keep the same approach. I never really thought about it, but maybe something with plastic art, maybe ceramics, interior design or a restorer.

Where and how do you find your inspiration?

From the script, ahah 🙂
I study the mood and the storyline of the story I’m gonna draw. Also, I research similar projects of the publisher I’m gonna work with (if it’s a new one). I try to imagine my own interpretation of the script and adapt and mix it with my style. I think inspiration is a very personal thing, it depends also on the books you’re reading, and the experiences and emotions you have with it

How is your personality reflected in your work?

I’m a happy girl, and when I work I do princess rooms, little pony problems, Tsum Tsum solving mysteries on toy trains. So my work and my personality are quite the same, ahah!

Are you making the artwork you want to make?

Absolutely yes. I’m lucky and happy

What does a typical working day look like for you?

It’s very similar to office work. I usually try to keep normal working hours, morning, then a lunch break and I try to finish my work (if I don’t have some deadline) before dinner time. I have deadlines to hit every week, so I keep my schedules organized (or I swear I try 🙂 )

Which artwork are you most proud of and why?

I think The Incredibles with Disney. It was one of the biggest works I did and It has been the launch phase of my career. And in the meantime, I was buying my house, so I’m quite proud to make two important things in my life at the same time.

What reactions do you hope to get from your work?

I always hope people will put their hands on their cheeks and say “Awwww! <3”!

Has your work changed over the years and why?

A lot! My style has changed, it adapts to every work request. I want to grow as an artist, so I think the things I study have influenced my art.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Keep on insisting, young lady!

Are there any mediums you would like to explore that you haven’t already?

Video games!

How do you spend your time when you’re not working?

Eating chips, buying plants (many plants), and cuddling my kittens! Oh, and I take a lot of photos of the food my boyfriend cooks, so everybody thinks I’m a good chef!

What are your future goals with your art?

I’m intrigued about becoming an editor of a small project. It could be funny!

You’re stranded on a desert island and you can only take three art tools/ material with you, what would you pack and why?

The iPad, it’s pencil nibs and an infinite battery 🙂

” The emotions of my characters often reflect my own feelings. Even though most of my images have a pretty melancholic vibe,  I’m actually a very happy person”
